Changing Girls Basketball... One Dribble at a Time...
The WESCON FILLIES AAU Basketball organization was founded in 1992 with the goal of providing not only quality basketball training, but also a positive learning experience that enables each athlete to achieve her personal goals. The organization is a member of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and has gained recognition throughout Fairfield County, as being one of the most successful and respected girls’ developmental basketball programs in the State. The WESCON Fillies program supports more than 200 girls in six different age brackets, and affords these girls the opportunity to represent their communities in tournaments throughout the State as well as the Northeast. Since inception, the Fillies organization has grown in both its numbers of teams and number of participants; it has expanded its geography to cover an area stretching across the State from Farmington to Danbury to Norwalk.
One of the benefits of an AAU-sponsored program is that the individual participant is given the chance to build her self-image, while participating in a team activity. The skills and experience gained in an AAU program can enhance each participant’s chances of playing in high school, continuing through college, and even playing with a women’s professional basketball league. To many, it can represent the means by which they will be able to attend college, and earn an education, with the assistance of a sport’s scholarship.
In order to provide this opportunity, the WESCON Fillies AAU program requires each athlete to pay the necessary registration fees to cover the cost of uniforms, tournament entry fees, insurance, qualified coaches, and gym space for practice and games. Additional expenses paid by each player personally, includes traveling, lodging, and meal costs at out-of-state tournaments. These expenses can sometimes be a burden to athletes and their families. I am hopeful of obtaining additional financial support from local businesses and friends to help defray the cost of the overall program, as well as the additional travel and lodging expenses.
